The aim of the present study was to evaluate the productive and economic response of fattening of beef steers penned using two supply forms of a grains based diet: DS (daily supply) and SLF (self limiting feeders). For this purpose, a trial was conducted with 24 A. Angus steers of 309 ± 31 kg live weight and 480 ± 30 days of age in the Reserva 6 of INTA EEA Balcarce (Argentina), between 01/12/2015 and 04/06/2015 (16 days of transition and 68 days of fattening diet). The animals were grouped in 6 blocks according to previous management and were randomized to two treatments. Twelve pens were used and the treatments were: DS fed twice a day, trying the refused does not exceed 5 % of total intake; and SLF ad-libitum. The diet consisted of 85 % whole corn grain and 15 % sunflower pellet, and had the following characteristics: dry matter (DM): 91.2 %; digestibility DM: 79.4 %; crude protein: 12.4 %; starch: 61.6 %; neutral detergent fiber: 10.7 %; metabolizable energy concentration: 2.9 Mcal ME/kg DM. The average daily gain (ADG), intake, feed efficiency (FE), FT (fat thickness at 12th rib), carcass yield (CY), starch digestibility using predictive equations, excreted grain status, intake behavior were measured, and economic result was calculated. Energy efficiency was estimated using the NRC system. The variables of physical and economic production were divided in two periods: the first 42 days of fattening and the remaining 26 days. There were no significant differences between treatments (p>0.05) in the ADG (1.05 ± 0.18 and 1.04 ± 0.23), the final weight (388.99 ± 42.39 and 388.16 ± 42.90), FE (145.65 ± 18.3 and 131.29 ± 20.8) and FT (8.66 ± 2.03 and 9.69 ± 1.23). In SLF, higher (p <0.05) DM intake (7.91 ± 1.02 kg DM/d) and CY were observed (57.70 ± 1.97%) respect to DS (7.21 ± 0.82 kg DM/d and 56.07 ± 1.79%, respectively). There were no significant differences (p>0.05) in intake between the first days (0-42) and the remainder (43-68) of the fattening, but showed higher (p <0.05) ADG (1.135 ± 0.300 vs 0.820 ± 0.340 kg/d) and FE (138 ± 26 vs 109 ± 51 kg LW/tn DM). The rate of fattening was not influenced by treatments, but was 2.5 times higher in the first 42 days (2.13 ± 0.92 mm/month) compared to the remaining 26 days (0.83 ± 1.46 mm/month). There were no differences (p> 0.05) in any of the variables related to energy expenditure per kg of live weight produced, had a cost of 18.65 Mcal ME. The behavioral patterns during the transition and in the fattening phase were evaluated. During the transition, the time spent eating was greater (p <0.05) in DS and during fattening in SLF. In contrast, there was no difference in ruminating time. The type of supply did not affect the utilization of the corn grain (p>0.05), since the treatments has similar digestion of the starch (87.9 and 86.3 in DS and SLF, respectively), weight of excreted grains (18.8 and 20.7 g/100 g DM in DS and SLF, respectively) and percentage of apparently whole grains were observed in the feces (41.75 % whole and 58.25 % broken grains). The cost of labor and fuel to supply the feed in SLF ($ 45.40/steer) was lower than in DS ($ 134.84/steer), but feed expenditure was higher (1276 ± 165 vs. 1165 ± 133 $/steer for SLF and DS, respectively) and, consequently, the gross margin of SLF (29 ± 286 $/steer) and DS (45 ± 240 $/animal) were not significantly different. It is concluded that self limiting feeders had not negative effects on the productive and economic response of fattening to beef steers penned using a grain based diet, and due to its simplicity, self limiting feeders is a advisable tool to implement in commercial establishments with labor limitations.eng
