Abstract

The fate of pesticides in the environment is influenced by processes of retention,
transformation / degradation and transport in the soil. And these processes depend on the physical-chemical properties of the pesticides, soil characteristics, management
practices and climatic conditions. Indeed, the interaction of these factors affects their mobility and persistence and, consequently, their polluting potential. The objective of the thesis is to contribute to the study of pesticide contamination in soil and water by
regional agriculture and know its contribution to adjacent systems (surface and groundwater). Studies were carried out at different space-time scales: 1) at basin level to identify the pesticides that reach the surface waters and their seasonal distribution under
agricultural and urban-industrial land uses; 2) at sub basin level to identify pesticides in groundwater; 3) at field level to analyze the effect of the intensification of the crops sequence on their loss by runoff and soil retention; 4) and at lysimeters level to understand the effect of soil type and/or edaphic properties on vertical transport. Thirtythree pesticides and one metabolite were analyzed. In the geohydromorphic conditions of the region, the analyzed compounds reach the bodies of water, with a greater
frequency of detection and concentration in the surface water than in the groundwater and particularly under urban-industrial land use. The production system with a
predominance of soy monoculture, clearly, stimulates its loss towards adjacent systems. A low stubble coverage added to the existence of preferential flow characteristic of
structured soils with impoverished fertility under direct drilling, explains this
behavior. The intensification of the sequence of crops attenuates the loss. The effect of the loss outside the plot causes unavoidable environmental impacts, but these can be partially attenuated.
