Stem-base canker (CBT) by Leptosphaeria maculans is the most important disease of canola (Brasica napus L var. olerifera) wordwide. The primary infection is caused mainly by ascospores coming from previous years infested straw. Ascospores germinate and penetrate the leaves during the initial vegetative-growth stages of canola causing leaf spots (MF) in autumn/early winter. From these leaf spots the pathogen can invade the stem and reach the stem-end causing stem canker. In Argentina there are no previous studies on this pathosystem that allow: 1) to identify the period of higher susceptibility of leaf infection that originate CBT; 2) to relate epidemics of MF with CBT. To aim these objectives two experiments were carried out at Balcarce Experimental Station, National Institute of Agricultural Technology, Argentina (37°S, 58°W) during 2010 and 2011. In the first assay, canola plants growing in pots were exposed to natural inoculation in the field. Four cultivars with different cycle length and resistance to CBT were grown in the greenhouse to obtain plants with different phonological growing stages. All at once, plants were transfer to the field and exposed to a favorable environment for the infection (high inoculum pressure and high relative humidity). When 100% of the plants in the susceptible cultivar present leaf spots, this period was finished and the stage of post infection started. Half of the plants were relocated in the greenhouse and the other half remained in the field for the evaluation of CBT (when 50% of the plants reached the colored pod stage). The number of leaves at first leaf spot detection (NH1M), the severity progress, and the area under severity progress curve were registered. Relations between MF and CBT were established. The highest correlation was found between CBT severity and NH1M, establishing regressions that related both variables in the most susceptible cultivar N8450 during post infection (quadratic function in the “field” and lineal in the “greenhouse”) and in Hidromel and H61 (exponential decayed model in the field post infection only). In the second experiment only the susceptible cultivar N8450 was tested and infested stems (straw) from the previous year were distributed between the rows to increase the inoculum. High relative humidity was maintained by moistened the foliage with micro sprinkle irrigation. A complete block randomized design with three replications was used. Treatments include single applications of Azoxistrobin (Az) or Propiconazole (Pr) (300 cm3/ha) at the 2, 4, 6 or 8 leaf stage. Non protected controls (CD) and protected ones (AzP or PrP) were included at each stage. MF incidence was registered during the epidemic and CBT at flowering and physiological maturity by cutting the stem-end canker. The treatments PrP and AzP had the lowest final MF incidence (12,2% and 16,8%, respectively) while the non-protected plants (CD) reached 44,8%. Among single-applied fungicide, Az2 (23,5%) and Az4 (29,2%) gave the best MF control. Also, these treatments gave the lowest levels of CBT at physiological maturity and did not differ from AzP (8,3%) . The best correlation between maximal incidence (aGompertz) MF and CBT was at flowering stage (incidence; r =0,89) or at physiological maturity (severity; r =0,87). Gompertz was the best model for adjusting MF progress curves.eng
