There are no conclusive results about the effect that N exerts in sweet cherry orchards regarding the crop yield, the characteristics of the fruit, the accumulation of reserves, or the risk of nitrateleaching. Due to these uncertainties, decisions related to their cultivation are based on research conducted on other fruit trees. Using adult orchards in the field work process, the objectives of this thesis were to determine: (a) the main organs storing N according to the time of N fertilizer application; (b) the nitrate distribution in the soil profile as a way of predicting its leaching risk; and (c) the influence of greater doses of N on vegetative, foliar and fruit quality parameters. Additionally, systematization of the information for the site-specific management of N fertilization was obtained. N partitioning was studied on carrying out 15N application at two different times: spring and postharvest. Trees were excavated and divided into their components so as to determine N and biomass partition, N percentage derived from the fertilizer and N fertilizer used (%NFU). The leaching potential was determined by characterizing nitrate profiles up to 120 cm deep, in orchards with different irrigation, row cover, and fertilization management. The effects of the application of three N doses, up to 300 gN tree -1, were studied during three seasons, and phenological, vegetative and productive indicators were determined. The software ArcView was used to extrapolate the data of land utilization, soil and foliar N, irrigation type and potential yield, and to obtain the maps for the GIS. Main conclusions were as follows: (1) the postharvest period was a good time for the accumulation of N reserves in the tree, though it was less effective than the application in spring (%NFU: 37 versus 65%). (2) On the other hand, when N was applied in the postharvest period less N was extracted (18 versus 31 kgNha-1) with the harvest and the pruned wood. No adverse effects were detected on fruit quality when high doses of N were applied. Short grass between rows was a good resource to prevent nitrate leaching. Based on the results obtained in this thesis, simple models may be developed to predict the N requirements of sweet cherry.eng
