Since the mid- 90s, in spite of the technological advances, traditional livestock producers have been unwilling to incorporate and make use of the available technology. Although some techniques would enable them to handle many of their production problems, these tools seem not to be suitable for their system management. Questions arise concerning the reasons why these producers react in this way and do not accept other practices. The aim of this work is to focus on these producer´s racionality in an attempt to disentangle the effects of all the factors that influence. For this purpose, it is deemed necessary to approach the traditional livestock producers in their typical production area in Argentina in order to delve into their rationality. The study area was based on the district of Azul, in the province of Buenos Aires, which is representative of the livestock basin. In order to understand the rationality of their system management in a broad sense, the study comprised not only quantitative tools but also those qualitative tools that play an essential role in system managing. It could be noticed that producer's actions are based on practices and strategies that stem from inner non arbitrary motivations, incorporated through ecological, technological, cultural and emotional processes. That is to say, producers have their own way of thinking their production system. Hence, it is possible to point out that there are as many rationalities as producers, and as a consequence, there are various ways of perceiving reality, which is neither better nor worse, but only different. The results presented enable us to support the work hypothesis which states that the rationality of traditional livestock producers in their production systems management responds to a wide variety of factors. It is necessary to gain a clear understanding that the biophysical environment and the economic-administrative framework where production is developed blend with traditions, family values and subjective aspects linked to their personal background, their experience, their attitude towards risks, and their culture, among others.eng
