| spa |
dc.description.abstract | The characteristics of fiber diameter from 498 Merino ewes were measured to characterize the variability in fiber diameter of Merino sheep from northwestern Patagonia. Animals belonged to two strains (G: superfine and control), and they were measured during two growth periods (P: humid and dry). Three different age categories were formed (E: young, adult and old). Fiber diameter was measured along the staple using an OFDA2000 instrument. The traits considered were average fiber diameter (DMF), its coefficient of variation (CVDMF), the maximum fiber diameter (MAX), the minimum initial fiber diameter (Min1), the minimum final fiber diameter (Min2), the initial and final rates of change in fiber diameter (TCD1 and TCD2) and the coefficient of variation of diameters along the fiber (CVAlong). DMF and MAX were significantly affected by the period and by the interaction G*E. Diameters were larger during the humid period (p<0.01), which reflects better environmental conditions. The analysis of the interactions suggested that fiber diameter increased with the age in the super fine flock but not in the control flock. A lack of variability due to strain was found for CVDMF and CVAlong, thus indicating that both strains reacted the same way to the environmental conditions. On the other hand both coefficients of variation were affected by the interaction E*P. Younger ewes were more sensitive to the dry period, yielding larger CVDMF and CVAlong. TCD1 was affected by G and by P, being larger in the control flock and in the humid period than in their respective counterparts. The interaction G*P significantly affected TCD2. The latter variable was found to be similar for both strains during the humid period. However, during the dry period TCD2 was larger in the control flock than in the superfine flock. Better conditions of the humid period resulted in larger fiber diameters and fiber diameter change rates. The differences in diameters, coefficients of variation and rates, were related to the average fiber diameter of each strain. Adverse environmental conditions produced a more variable response of fiber diameter in ewes with second shearing. | eng |
