The growing use of agrochemicals in Argentina and the world has awakened the interest of the scientific community in understanding their behaviour in the environment. Glyphosate is the most commonly used herbicide worldwide; its main degradation metabolite is AMPA. Both are strongly adsorbed to soil and have a low potential for leaching. However, they have been detected in groundwater. In contrast, metsulfuron-methyl is a herbicide that is weakly adsorbed to soil and has a high leaching capacity. Most of the studies on these molecules have been carried out in the first centimetres of the soil, so their behaviour at greater depths is unknown, where the characteristics differ from those of the surface horizon, and it is to be expected that the behaviour of the molecules will be different. The aim of this thesis was to study the retention and vertical transport processes of glyphosate, AMPA and metsulfuron-methyl in the main horizons of a typical Argiudol. For this purpose, a characterisation of each horizon was carried out, followed by a study of the vertical transport in undisturbed soil columns. Doses equivalent to 5 kg ha-1 of active ingredient (a.i.) and 10 g ha-1 a.i. of glyphosate and metsulfuron-methyl, respectively, were applied. The leachate was collected per time unit and the concentration of each compound in the leachate was determined. Step curves were plotted and the convection-dispersion equation was used, employing the equilibrium, physical non-equilibrium and chemical non-equilibrium models to characterise the leaching of each compound. The retention process was studied through adsorption and desorption isotherms. The initial concentrations evaluated were from 2 to 50 mg L-1 for glyphosate, from 2 to 100 mg L-1 for AMPA and from 0.2 to 5 mg L-1 for metsulfuron-methyl. Desorption was studied in the samples corresponding to 50 mg L-1 for glyphosate and AMPA and 0.5 and 5 mg L-1 for metsulfuron-methyl. The data obtained were analysed using the Freundlich and Langmuir models. The results obtained indicated that both glyphosate and AMPA were strongly adsorbed to the soil in all three horizons, being this adsorption higher in the B horizon; while desorption was weak for both molecules, being slightly higher in the C horizon. Vertical transport was scarce, and the herbicide was not detected in the leachate of the C horizon. On the contrary, metsulfuron-methyl had a weak adsorption, being its adsorption higher in the A horizon; while desorption was relevant, being higher in the C horizon. Leaching of this herbicide was high, being higher in the C horizon. These results lead to the conclusion that metsulfuron-methyl is the most mobile compound in the soil due to its ability to leach and low adsorption, while glyphosate and AMPA are less mobile, given their higher adsorption, weak desorption and low leaching. However, the ability of either molecule to be transported through the soil profile should not be underestimated.eng
