Estudios de variabilidad en atributos de semilla y plántulas en poblaciones de Piptochaetium napostaense

Abstract

El uso de semillas de gramíneas es una estrategia de recuperación de pastizales en diferentes regiones. El objetivo del trabajo fue describir caracteres de semillas y de plántulas de interés, y su respectiva variabilidad en poblaciones de Piptochaetium napostaense, especie forrajera de los pastizales del Espinal. Se estudió el peso de las semillas, atributos de germinación y vigor de las plántulas en 7 poblaciones de Piptochaetium napostaense colectadas en la región del Espinal, delimitados al norte por la localidad de Victorica, y al sur, por la localidad de Perú, en la provincia de La Pampa. Se presentaron diferencias entre poblaciones para las variables peso de semilla y germinación. La población 3, mostró los mayores valores en peso (670 mg cada 100 semillas), y P6 el mayor porcentaje de germinación (62 %). El vigor de plántulas fue una variable que no presentó diferencias entre poblaciones. El peso de las semillas se correlacionó de forma positiva con la altura aérea de las plántulas. El mejoramiento de esta especie por selección de caracteres sería factible en atributos como germinación y peso, siendo una estrategia útil en la rehabilitación de pastizales, con el propósito de aumentar la frecuencia de las especies forrajeras.

The use of grass seeds is a strategy for grassland recovery in different regions. The objective of this study was to describe traits of seeds and seedlings of interest, and their respective variability in populations of Piptochaetium napostaense, a forage species from the Espinal grasslands. The seed weight, germination attributes and vigor of seedlings were studied in 7 populations of Piptochaetium napostaense collected in the Espinal region, delimited to the north by the locality of Victorica, and to the south by the locality of Perú, in the province of La Pampa. Differences were presented between populations for the variables seed weight and germination. Population 3 showed the highest values in weight (670 mg per 100 seeds), and P6 showed the highest percentage of germination (62 %). The vigor of seedlings was a variable that did not present differences between populations. The weight of seeds was positively correlated with the aerial height of seedlings. The improvement of this species by selection of characters would be feasible in attributes such as germination and weight, being a useful strategy in the rehabilitation of grasslands, with the purpose of increasing the frequency of forage species.
