Evaluación de líneas contrastantes de maíz frente a Xanthomonas vasicola pv. vasculorum en condiciones de invernadero y campo
Abstract
El maíz (Zea mays L.) es uno de los principales cultivos utilizados para la alimentación y la industria en el mundo. El maíz (Zea mays L.) es uno de los principales cultivos utilizados para la alimentación y la industria en el mundo. El rayado o estriado bacteriano foliar de maíz (RBM) causado por Xanthomonas vasicola pv. vasculorum, es una enfermedad ampliamente distribuida en las Américas, que afecta el potencial del cultivo, presentando un riesgo de introducción en nuevas áreas. Los síntomas se caracterizan por lesiones acuosas en el parénquima foliar inicialmente cloróticas y luego necróticas en etapas más avanzadas, dando un aspecto de rayado o estriado. El objetivo de este trabajo fue comparar niveles de resistencia y susceptibilidad a la enfermedad bajo infección artificial en invernadero con respecto a la infección natural a campo, utilizando líneas endocriadas de maíz pertenecientes al Programa de Mejoramiento Genético de INTA Pergamino. Se utilizaron dos líneas testigos (testigo resistente (TR) y testigo susceptible (TS)), y cuatro líneas con diferente perfil fitosanitario (L1, L2, L3 y L4), evaluadas previamente a campo en diferentes ambientes. Para la evaluación en invernadero, las plantas fueron inoculadas en estadio fenológico V3 utilizando una técnica ajustada por el equipo de trabajo, realizando un corte en el ápice de cada hoja con tijera inmersa en inóculo infectivo (108 UFC ml-1 ) o en solución MgCl2 como control. A los 12 días post infección (dpi) se evaluó el índice de severidad (IS) de las hojas infectadas, utilizando una escala diagramática validada de cinco categorías, según el porcentaje del área foliar afectada. La severidad a campo fue evaluada en estadio fenológico R5 bajo presión de inóculo natural. En condiciones de invernadero, las líneas presentaron diferente IS, diferenciándose grupos de líneas resistentes (IS 1:TR y L3, IS 2: L2 y L4), moderadamente resistente (IS 3: L1) o susceptible (IS 5: TS). Los datos obtenidos coincidieron con evaluaciones previas realizadas a campo bajo alta presión de inóculo, en diferentes ambientes (campaña 2018/19). No obstante, en la última campaña (2023/24), las líneas mostraron una severidad menor al 1% (IS:1), igual que el TR, probablemente debido a una menor presión de inóculo. Este resultado subraya la necesidad de realizar infecciones controladas en invernadero. Esto permite detectar genotipos resistentes en etapas tempranas utilizando una técnica altamente reproducible y de bajo costo, reduciendo la influencia de factores bióticos y abióticos que podrían afectar la evaluación y mejorando la precisión. De este modo, sería factible implementar estrategias de mejora más eficientes que permitan el desarrollo futuro de nuevas variedades.
