The selection of grazing sites by the animals responds to a complex interaction of conditions that must be studied at different spatio-temporal scales in the specificity of each place. In the case of the Patagonian livestock systems, the sheep graze in large paddocks with a heterogeneous distribution of natural resources. Therefore, the knowledge of their grazing habits is an important tool for the grasslands management. The present work studied the distribution of sheep in a 1300 ha paddock with 6 vegetational types including the native Ñire forest. Through the spatial positioning of 5 sheep and the spatial characterization of the landscape, the response of the animals was modeled, determining the relative importance of the 7 predictor variables contemplated. All the variables were significant, but the most important was terrain elevation, followed by terrain slope, distance from fences, distance from water sources, vegetational type, terrain aspect and finally the distance from roads. The sheep selected widely the sectors of vega and the sites with slope, while the forest was the least preferred vegetational type. It is important to repeat this studies, under different landscape arrangements, in order to increase the knowledge of the distribution habits of sheep in the extensive conditions of South Patagonia.
