Abstract

Abstract: A baseline monitoring is a reference point with which compare and detect future changes according to the management proposed. The implementation of new productive schemes (eg., intensive silvopastoral management or MSI) must necessarily include a baseline and subsequent monitoring in order to evaluate the sustainability of the system. This work evaluated the initial situation of tree (ñire) regeneration and the botanical composition in different representative habitats in San Pablo ranch, prior to the implementation of MSI. A total of 32 sampling stations were established in ñire forests, “capados” (burned forests for pastures),
forest-grassland edges and grasslands. 64 regeneration plots and 128 vegetation plots were surveyed. The highest sapling density was recorded at forest-grassland edge (3288 ind.ha-1) and ñire forest (1048 ind.ha-1), which also had the highest sapling height. Tree regeneration was scarce in capados (75 ind.ha-1), with a shrubby form. Herbivory was high (75-100%) and it did not differ between habitats. Ñire forests had the highest ferns cover, the grasslands the largest pasture cover, followed by capados and edges. Of the total
registered species (92), 15% were indicators and 20% were detectors: 6 indicator species and 7 detectors in ñire forests; 4 indicators and 3 detectors in capados; 3 indicators and 5 detectors in the pasture; and only 1 indicator and 1 detector forest-grassland edge. We recommend to monitor tree regeneration and to analyze the evolution of indicator species of each habitat, to identify evidence of degradation (decrease in abundance or loss of indicator species) or of environmental changes through detector species.
